I love Amy Schumer. I find her hilarious and love everything she stands for. I remember I first fell in love with her when I saw this clip of her on Ellen:
So when I found out that she had written a book, I of course wanted to read it. And when I found out the title of the book, I wanted to read it even more. As an homage to the bestselling novel by Stieg Larsson, Amy titled it: The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo.

What I thought of it:
It is laugh out loud funny. Fair warning, I learned this can be embarrassing when you have your headphones in at the gym or annoying when your husband is trying to go to bed. I did a combo of reading it and listening to the audiobook. I actually prefer the audiobook because Amy Schumer reads it so you get the effect of her inflections and comedic timing that makes it even funnier.
But, it is a lot more than that: it is raw and honest. You will walk away thinking, “Wow, she has been through some tough sh**”–both the literal and metaphoric kind. There is something so human in finding out the unglamorous details of a celebrity’s life because often we are just comparing ourselves to their highlight reel. So, I appreciated her willingness to be so vulnerable in sharing the most painful aspects of her life from abusive relationships to her dad’s battle with M.S.
If you are not yet convinced…
9 quotes from Amy Schumer’s Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo:
- (On being a female introvert) “Women are always expected to be the gracious hostess, quick with an anecdote and a sprinkling of laughter at others’ stories…But when we do not fulfill this expectation (because we are introverted), people assume we must be either depressed or a ****.”
- “I am amazing for you, not because of you. I am not who I sleep with. I am not my weight. I am not my mother. I am myself. And I am all of you.”
- “I’m a real woman who digests her meals and breaks out and has sweet little pockets of cellulite on her upper thighs that she’s not apologizing for.”
- “I like to keep things super basic – no solar analogies or rose-colored filters of any kind. Just the Valencia one on Instagram, because I look super good in that one.”
- “The moments that make life worth living are when things are at their worst and you find a way to laugh.”
- (On things she hates) “People who misspell the word ‘you’re’ when telling me I’m fat (‘your fat’).”
- (Advice on dating profiles) “In my main profile picture, I was wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap and no make-up…I also put a picture of Sophia from The Golden Girls and Claire Danes making her cry face on Homeland.“
- (On her biggest pet peeves) “People who bring a book to a bar deserve to be stoned. Don’t try to look mysterious and interesting. You are reading in a bar.”
- “My sister tested my IQ when she was getting her master’s degree in school psychology and I tested as a genius in half the categories and nearly cognitively impaired in the other half.”
The book made me laugh. It made me think. It made me feel understood. It is definitely worth checking out! And you will love the chapters in the book when Amy publishes an entry from her childhood diary with footnotes of her present day commentary – they’re the best.
