Holy cow!! I could not be more excited to share this Halo Top review with you all! This product is incredible – it’s almost too good to be true. But it is. I tried it. Halo Top ice cream is THE best lower-calorie ice cream product that you may have been walking past at your local grocery store all this time. Hear what I thought and make sure you follow my very important halo top review tip below. Then, spread the word by sharing this post – your friends will thank you.
So, what makes it so great?
Halo Top ice cream has roughly 75% fewer calories than Ben & Jerry’s because it is lower in fat and sugar AND it is delicious! The entire pint (varies by flavors) has about 280 calories, 6-8g fat and about 16g net carb. Guess how many calories are in a pint of Ben & Jerry’s? Nearly 1,000 or more!
You may want to defend Ben & Jerry and think “Well, that is just because they have super decadent flavors like Chocolate Fudge Brownie.” Nope. See the comparison to the right of Vanilla Halo Top vs. Vanilla Ben & Jerry’s per 1/2 cup serving (keep in mind 4 servings per pint). Halo Top comes in at 240 calories per pint of vanilla. Ben & Jerry’s has a whopping 1,000 calories per pint vanilla ice cream. Even without the chocolate, fudge, or brownies!
But, it is not just about what it doesn’t have, it is what it does have too: extra protein and fiber! Each pint has 24 g protein (that’s as much as is in 4 eggs). Plus, it has 12g fiber (nearly half your daily value). That’s almost as much fiber as the average American eats in an entire day. By the way, I am really trying to restrain myself here and not end every sentence with an exclamation mark, but it’s tough because this stuff is awesome!
You may be thinking…”Yeah, yeah we’ve heard of ‘healthy’ ice cream before.”
Believe me, I get it. I’ve wasted money on other brands like Artic Zero and been utterly (I swear I didn’t even intentionally include the cow pun there) disappointed. So, I was skeptical too, but I tried it and I had my husband who hates anything related to “diet” food try it and we were blown away!
We bought the Halo Top Cake Batter flavor. It was about $3.99 at our local store but I am sure that varies by location quite a bit. When we got home from the store, we just couldn’t wait until after dinner to try it. So, we dug right in. It was delicious! Creamy, smooth, sweet but not too sweet, and the funfetti style rainbow chips added a hint of nostalgia. Where’s that emoticon with the heart eyes when you need it?! Needless to say, it did not disappoint. Two thumbs way, way up here. Isn’t the packaging adorable too?
Now one very important halo top review tip: make sure you let it sit out for like 15 mins before you eat it. That way it will soften a bit and it gets an even smoother, creamier texture that makes it even better.
How do they cut down the sugar and fat and still have it taste great?
Magic. No, but seriously, per the Halo Top website:
We use organic stevia. Stevia is a plant native to Paraguay that’s been used to sweeten foods and beverages for more than 200 years…We also use Erythritol, which though it has a rather scientific-sounding name, is actually another all-natural sweetener found in fruits like pears and grapes. Though it’s technically a sugar alcohol, it’s unlike the others because erythritol doesn’t affect blood glucose or cause bloating.
While sugar alcohols have gotten a bad wrap for digestive complaints over the years, erythritol tends to cause fewer complaints compared to other sugar alcohols. I did not experience any discomfort, but this is a good reason not to go crazy and eat multiple pints at a time.
What flavors does Halo Top come in?
A huge variety! In looking it up online, I found out they have a ton of flavors that weren’t carried at our local store. Here are just a few mentioned on the HaloTop website:
So, I will have to go hunt more of them down and taste them for the good of She Tried What readers everywhere 😉 I will be sure to update you guys on my favorites. Something tells me my husband will be more than happy to help too.
Ok, I will stop blabbing and tell you how to get some…Click here to find where Halo Top is carried. But first, be a good friend and share the scoop with your friends on social using the buttons at the top of the post.
Hope you enjoyed this Halo Top review! Netflix nights just got so much better…
